Cutting Fluid Foaming on CNC Machines: Problem and Solution
Foam cuts cooling, causes overflow and pump cavitation. The real causes of foaming and lasting solutions.
Foaming is common on high-pressure coolant and high-rpm CNC machines. Foam not only overflows the sump; it stops fluid reaching the edge, reduces cooling and causes pump cavitation. To solve it you first have to find the cause.
Causes of foaming
- —Soft water: Very soft water (low hardness) feeds foam. Very hard water causes other problems; balanced water is needed.
- —High concentration: Too much concentrate = too many surfactants = foam. Check with a refractometer.
- —Air entrainment: A leak on the suction line, low fluid level or a wrong nozzle angle draws air into the fluid.
- —High pressure/flow: High-pressure systems are prone to foam; the formula must suit them.
- —Foreign cleaner: Detergent/cleaner leaking into the sump sets off foam.
Lasting solutions
- —Bring concentration back into the maker's range.
- —Keep the fluid level sufficient; do not let the pump suck air.
- —Fix suction-line and seal leaks, aim the nozzle into the fluid.
- —Check water hardness; adjust if needed.
- —Use an antifoam additive — but in a small, correct dose; too much backfires.
- —Switch to a foam-resistant product suited to your system.
A note on antifoam additives
Antifoams give a quick fix, but continually dosing without solving the root cause (air, concentration, water) is not sustainable. Fix the mechanical and concentration causes first.
Summary
Foaming is usually a combination of water, concentration and air leaks. It is solved for good with measurement + mechanical correction + the right product. Ahmet Ceviz identifies the foam cause on site and recommends the right product/additive; contact us for a sample and support.
