What Are TDS and MSDS? Technical and Safety Sheets for Industrial Oils
A TDS tells you how to use the product; the MSDS (SDS) covers safe handling and storage. We explain the difference and how to read them.
When buying industrial oil, two documents are often requested: the TDS and the MSDS. They answer different questions and do not replace each other.
TDS (Technical Data Sheet)
The TDS explains how to use the product. It typically contains:
- —Product description and area of use
- —Typical physical/chemical values (viscosity, density, pH, concentration range)
- —Mixing/dilution ratio and application advice
- —Material and operation suitability
A TDS is not a marketing brochure but a reference document for correct use.
MSDS / SDS (Safety Data Sheet)
The MSDS (now called SDS) explains the safe use of the product and legally consists of 16 standard sections:
- —Hazard identification and labelling
- —First aid, firefighting, accidental release measures
- —Handling, storage, personal protective equipment
- —Toxicology, ecology and disposal information
The SDS is mandatory for occupational safety, storage and waste processes.
The difference in one sentence
TDS = how to use it; SDS/MSDS = how to use and store it safely. Ask for both together.
How to read them
In the TDS, "typical values" are guidance, not a guaranteed specification; for a critical application request the current revision. In the SDS, check the date and revision number; it is updated as regulations change.
Ahmet Ceviz provides current TDS and SDS for all products the same day. Request them via the Request TDS/MSDS button on product pages, or directly from us.
